Does an Outdoor Water Feature Have a Cooling Effect?

Does an Outdoor Water Feature Have a Cooling Effect?

Are you feeling the summer heat? Do you wish you could cool down somehow? Some homeowners believe placing water features strategically around their property drops the temperature a few notches. Other people say it’s nonsense, so who’s telling the truth here?

Does an Outdoor Water Feature Have a Cooling Effect?

The reality is a water feature strategically placed in your yard – even several of them isn’t going to create any cooling effect for the surrounding area. It takes massive bodies of water to cool down the atmosphere around you.

That’s why when you visit the lake in the early morning on the brink of a cold day, you’ll see fog in the air and feel the moisture on your face and in your breath. Living in a valley around a water source like a river can see the mercury drop significantly overnight on your property.
Some homeowners state they experience up to a 20F drop in temperature just by driving a few hundred meters down the road to their homes. But the thing is, these bodies of water are large, and they’re big enough to affect the climate in the surrounding area.

Your water features indoors or outdoors aren’t going to produce enough cooling effects during the day to beat the power and efficacy of the air con. Even people with large swimming pools in their yards won’t notice any cooling effect of the water.

In some cases, they might notice a slight cooling effect at night, but that doesn’t hold up during the warm sunlight hours of the daytime. There’s no possibility of a water feature providing any measurable difference in the local environment around you, even indoors.

Alternative Solutions for Staying Cool Outside

So, if a water feature can’t keep you cool when the weather gets warm outdoors, what other strategies can you use to stay cool this summer? There are a couple of ideas, most of which are easy to execute.

Outdoor Shower

Showering outdoors is refreshing and easy. If you live in a hot climate, you can even step under for a short blast with your clothes on. An outdoor shower allows you to relax outside on a sunny day in your boardshorts and step under the shower whenever you need to cool down. Your friends will love it when they come over for a barbeque.

Dipping Pool

When the weather gets warm, buy a small above-ground pool that’s easy to assemble. Fill it and use it as a dipping pool. It’s a great idea for small homes and condos where space is at a premium. Plus, they’re easy to disassemble and pack away when the summer ends.

Spray Bar

This idea is great for patios, porches, and other outdoor areas around the home. Take a hose length and fit spray valves along it at a distance of 1.5 feet apart. Fit high-pressure spray nozzles producing a fine mist spray. Install the spray bar around your outdoor seating area by fixing it into the roof and positioning the spray nozzles to the seating. Hook the spray bar up to the tap, and you’re good to go.
