Tall fescue grass is one of the more important cool season grasses. The fescue grass species are easily planted with grass seed and include the sub species of broader leaved, bunching grasses named tall fescue and the group of finer leaved shorter fescue grass named Fine Fescue.
Types of Fescue Grass
Fine Fescues
Fine Fescues are unique among lawn grasses. They have the finest leaves, the most shade tolerance and the lowest fertilizer and moisture requirements of all cool seasons (Northern) turfgrasses. In addition they germinate more rapidly than Kentucky Bluegrasses or the Colonial Bentgrasses. This makes Fine Fescues an ideal selection for inclusion in Bluegrass or Bentgrass mixtures. They are also an ideal addition to Tall Fescue lawn mixes because of their shade tolerance.
Tall Fescue
Tall fescue is valued for its adaptability to a wide range of climates and its tolerances for cold, heat, drought and shade. In its preferred growing zones, tall fescue provides lawn owners with outstanding options for improving lawn resilience and durability. Depending on where you live and your lawn goals, this versatile grass may be an excellent choice for you.
Benefits of Fescue Grass
Other desirable traits in fescue grasses include a moderately rapid germination rate, fine leaf texture with a high leaf density and the ability to thrive in poor soil conditions, and low nitrogen requirements. Fescues will go dormant with excessive continuous heat without supplemental irrigation. Recovery from dormancy occurs after rains and cooler temperatures return.
