How to Save Storm Damaged Trees

How to Save Storm Damaged Trees

When gray skies roll in, thunder starts rumbling, bolts of lightning, gusty winds, and heavy rains roll in, you have the ability to seek shelter. Unfortunately, trees don’t have that luxury. In fact, instead of seeking shelter, trees have no other choice but to weather the storms. Trees play an important part in your landscaping. Not only do trees add visual interest and improve the aesthetic appeal of your property, but they also provide shade that’s much-needed on those hot, bright, sunny days. Trees can even offer privacy, as their limbs can block windows and prevent prying eyes from looking into your home. If you have a storm-damaged tree on your property, here are some tips to save it.

How to Save Storm Damaged Trees

Since trees are so important, it stands to reason that you want to keep your trees well-protected. However, since bad weather is bound to happen, and because your trees cannot seek shelter when bad weather rolls in, there’s a chance that they could sustain storm-related damage.

Lightning strikes, gusty winds, powerful rains, and even heavy snow and ice are all elements that can damage trees on your property. If you’ve recently discovered that one of your trees has sustained storm damage, whether that damage is minor or severe, there’s no doubt that you’re going to want to do all you can to try and save it.

If you have a storm-damaged tree, keep reading to learn some tips that you can use to save your arboreal friend.

Protect Yourself

Safety should always be your first priority when it comes to tree care. When you’re dealing with a tree that has been damaged by a storm, there’s a chance that you could sustain an injury. That said, employ strategies that will protect you from being injured.

When working around storm-damaged trees, wear a hard hat, safety glasses, and thick-soled shoes. If the tree damage is severe and you aren’t confident in your abilities, or if you feel like you’re in harm’s way no matter what kind of safety precautions you exercise, call in a professional, certified arborist to deal with the matter. Your safety is never worth risking.

Inspect the Damage

Once you’ve put safety strategies in place and you are confident that the tree won’t harm you, you’re going to want to inspect the structure. Walk around the perimeter of the structure and look for any of the following signs of damage:

  • Hanging branches or branches that have completely broken off
  • Splits in branches
  • Uneven or broken canopy (tree top)
  • Limbs or trunk is split, and has holes, or cavities
  • Heaving soil around the base of the structure
  • Visible root system
  • Uprooting
  • Toppling
  • Leaning

Use your discernment. If you don’t feel comfortable and think that you could sustain an injury, call in a local arborist.

Saving the Tree

The following tips can help you save your storm-damaged tree.

  • Prune broken branches to prevent further damage
  • Avoid pruning major limbs that are broken or that are higher up – call a professional arborist near you instead
  • Prune damaged limbs to the point where they connect to the larger branch
