You recently purchased a beautiful new home but the landscaping is less-than desirable. But there’s so much to be done and you’re so overwhelmed that you don’t know where to get started.

First, take a deep breath and accept the fact that it’s going to take some time and then device a plan of action. Here are our recommendations for where to get started with your new home’s landscaping project.

You Just Bought a New Home, Now Where to Start Landscaping?

Start with Hardscaping

Hardscaping (the elements of a landscape that are “hard”, like walkways, driveways, stoops, porches, etc) should be your first project. If your new home needs new hardscaping features, start on them before you dive into planting. These types of projects typically require some degree of construction that could damage soil, plants, and turf, so it’s wise to get the heavy work done before you dive into planting.

Focus on the Front

Your front yard should be your main focus. It’s the very first thing you (and everyone else) and establishing a great design will make your home pop. Curb appeal goes a long way!

If the lawn is lackluster, fertilize it; if it’s non-existent, seed or plant sod. In either case, don’t forget to water regularly. Establish or re-imagine flowerbeds filled with annuals and perennials. Trim back overgrown trees and shrubs.

Shift to the Back

Once you’re pleased with the work in the front, move to the back. Your backyard should be an outdoor oasis, so make sure you focus a good bit of effort into this space. If privacy is a concern, install fencing or walls, or plant trees or shrubs to create natural privacy. Plant flowers that are appropriate for your climate and soil. Create a seating area that you and your family and friends can enjoy.
