There is nothing quite like a wonderful garden path or walkway. These great walkway ideas can be straight or winding. You can have a path that is overgrown with plants or one that is as neat as can be. The purpose of a walkway or garden path is to lead the eye through a garden and add a bit of focus and charm. Every type of garden needs some type of path. If you do not need a walkway through the garden, you should at least consider a path that leads to an area of focus. The path can go around garden beds to make the yard seem bigger, or simply go nowhere in particular just to add a bit of design and structure to the outdoor space. Here are some great walkway and garden path ideas.
Walkways & Garden Path Ideas
1. Loose Materials
One great way to create a garden path is to use loose materials such as gravel, wood chips, or decomposed granite. These materials are inexpensive and very easy to work with. Stone or flexible metal can provide a definition to the garden pathway and offers a way to keep the gravel or mulch in place.
Some of the positives of using these materials are that they are soft to walk on, but still solid enough to handle any type of foot traffic. Borders enhance the looks of these types of pathways. While these pathways are cheap and easy to make, one downside is that you are going to have to redo them every one to three years. Gravel walkways are not suitable for steeper slopes and they are not the best choice for areas that get a lot of snow.
2. Pavers or Stepping Stone Paths
Pavers provide a great material to use for landscaping. You can use flagstone to create a perfect garden walkway. They are very easy to set into the sand to create a stylish and creative walkway in your yard. You can also use stepping stones to create a beautiful path. These pavers can be used to create many wonderful designs. The best part is, you can leave space in between the pavers or stones and place plants or other decorative items. One of our favorite DIY garden path ideas is to simply allow some grass to grow between the pavers or stones.
Perhaps one of the most traditional materials to use for a walkway is brick. Brick is truly a timeless material when it comes to outdoor designs. If you have an English or Mediterranean garden design, brick is really a great choice. You can design the pathway in any direction and even leave out spaces to make a unique feature. There is something quite nostalgic about using brick to create a pathway in your garden.
4. Stamped Concrete
When you are looking for garden path ideas, concrete might not come to mind at first. However, concrete offers a really great choice to use for your pathway. While plain concrete walkways might not be the prettiest, it is quite functional and can be used to create a simple path to the area that you need. If you want to truly create a unique path, consider using stamped concrete. There are special designs that you can stamp into your concrete path to provide you with a truly unique look. You can choose from a premade stamp or even create your own design to use for your walkway.
If you truly want to create a great garden path, consider using a mixture of materials. You can use pavers to create a solid path and then fill the gaps with colored mulch to provide a unique flair. Using stamped concrete in a solid slab provides a great pathway, but you can liven up a path by creating gaps in the stamped pieces and filling it with mulch, grass, or plants.
Overall, a walkway to your garden is a great way to add some value to your landscape. These great garden path ideas offer a wonderful focal point for your landscape. These paths also provide a way to truly show off your wonderful garden space.
