How to Add Holiday Lighting to Your Landscaping
There are endless ways that you can incorporate holiday lighting into your landscaping. In fact, the only limit is your imagination. With that said, however, if you need some holiday lighting inspiration, here are some great ideas to consider.
Create a Winter Wonderland of White
Create a simple, yet classic look for your winter landscape with white lighting. White lights are great because they’re versatile and can be used for all types of designs, from modern to a style that harkens the colonial days. White lights are magical, as they create a polished look that has a magical, fairy-like feeling, all at the same time. In order to create a modern look, use white mini lights. To call to mind bygone eras, larger bulbs are a better choice.
Laser Light Projectors
Laser light projectors might sound a little intimidating, but in reality, it’s actually one of the easiest ways to illuminate your landscape during the holiday season. In fact, in recent years, projectors have become one of the most popular types of outdoor lighting. Light projectors are available in a wide assortment of colors and can cast an array of images onto your trees, shrubs, and the exterior of your house. Some examples of images that you can project onto your home include:
- White and blue twinkling snowflakes
- Red and green Christmas ornaments
- Red and white candy canes
- A kaleidoscope of colors with no specific shape that dance and swirl

Go Retro
Kick it back in time to the 1960s and 1970s with your landscape holiday lighting motif. Go retro by hanging strings of multicolored, large bulbs along the eaves, and wrap mini multicolor lights around banisters. For a really retro look, you could even consider bubble lights, illuminated foil displays, light-up snowmen, Santa Claus, reindeer, and candle-shaped plastic figurines. A Sea of Blue
When most people think of holiday lights, blue usually isn’t the dominant color. Use lights in various shades of blue, from dark to light, and vary the sizes of the bulbs. Wash your trees, bushes, and any other landscaping features, including architectural elements, such as gazebos, in blue.
You could also add in some white lights or purple for even more interest. Alternatively, you could incorporate strands of multi-colored lights, but just a few. Blue should be the most abundant color and serve as the background, and then weave some multicolored lights throughout.
Icicle Lights
Create an icy, yet warm welcome using icicle lights. Icicle lights have been popular for quite a while, and for good reason, as they create a stunning look. Icicle lights are available in an assortment of colors, from white, blue, and even purple, to multicolored. Hang the lights from the eaves and gutters, and it will look as if your house is dripping with illuminated, sparkling icicles that will be sure to warm the hearts of people home for the holidays.
