Is a Clover Lawn a Good Idea?

Is a Clover Lawn a Good Idea?

Most homeowners want their lawns to be flawless without any unwanted growth or weeds affecting the look of the lawn. There are a few types of growths such as clover that come through grass patches in a yard, but not all of them are so bad. In fact, some homeowners add clover to their lawns for the great benefits that come with them. Keep reading to find out whether or not clover would be a good addition to your lawn.

Is a Clover Lawn a Good Idea?

Is a clover lawn a good idea – and what are the benefits of choosing clover rather than grass like most other people?

The short answer… yes!

Clover is an evergreen type of shrub that grows very well under almost any condition. However, clover really has the ability to flourish when you take care of it right.

Grass can be expensive and hard to maintain during the drier months of the year. Clover doesn’t share any of these common drawbacks of grass. In fact, a maintained patch of planted clover will stay green and great throughout the whole year.

Where grass practically gulps all the water that you give it, clover is drought tolerant and thrives on simple moisture. Therefore, clover doesn’t need to be watered as much as traditional grass.

The Benefits of a Clover Lawn

Cheaper to Install

Planting a clover lawn is much cheaper than planting a grass lawn. Not only will you pay less to install a clover lawn, but it’s also likely that you will pay much less to maintain it.

Affordable to Maintain

Maintaining grass throughout the entire year can be expensive. In the event of a drought, you can expect even more lawn maintenance expenses. The great thing about a clover lawn is that it’s affordable to maintain, and doesn’t soak up water and soil nutrients as quickly as grass.

Mow Less Often

The rate at which grass grows can be a huge drawback and make it expensive and time-consuming to maintain. During the summer months, you can expect to mow your lawn a lot more often. However, if you grow a clover lawn instead, it sticks closer to the ground and doesn’t need to be trimmed as often as a grass lawn.

Disease Resistant

Grass can be prone to diseases, and sometimes even brown patches that are caused by illness or a lack of sun or nutrients. Clover is pretty much resistant to most types of illnesses and diseases that would strike grass lawns. Not to mention, clovers don’t develop the characteristic dead patches of grass that you see with most lawns.

Doesn’t Eat Resources

One of the best things about a clover lawn as opposed to grass is the fact that clover doesn’t eat resources as quickly as a traditional grass lawn. If you wanted to keep your grass green all year, you can expect as much as a full-time job to do it. However, with clover, all you have to do is stick to a regular watering schedule and you’ll have a lush, green lawn all year round.
